A very brief history of
RIO-GRANDENSE LIBRARY EDITIONS

In 1846 it was founded a Reading Cabinet in the city of Rio Grande, which
based on associativism and communitarianism, had as its fundamental intent
the diffusion of the habit of reading. Considering the state of Rio Grande do Sul,
it was the oldest of its kind and, in 1878, the Cabinet would eventually became
the Rio-Grandense Library, an entity that had a predominant cultural role which
encompassed the city, the state, the national and the international. In addition to
reading, its actions were expended to educational initiatives, organization of
exhibitions, periodical archive and bibliographic, iconographic, documentary and
museum collections. From this wide performance, it would be known by the
epithet “Public Library”, such was the attention dedicated to users, readers and
researchers who visited it. Another activity developed was linked to book
publishing, bringing up to the public rare or scarcely circulated works, in the
scope of expanding access to their content. More recently, the Rio-Grandense
Library has resumed this course, publishing single publications and organizing
in partnership with Portuguese institutions, the Documents Collection and the
Rio-Grandense Collection.
